MARCHTODARCH.COM is a non-for profit research group committed to improving education in architecture/design related fields. The contributors to this site consist of architecture graduates working in both academia (teaching/research/administration) and professional practice (or some combination of both).
When most people think of architecture, they think of a bunch of nerdy, uptight middle-aged men hunched over at drafting tables drawing “buildings” with a T-Square. While this may still be true in some cases, the field of architecture has developed into a much more diverse, comprehensive and scholarly field that combines knowledge across multiple disciplines. In fact, the “Architecture” of the 21st century is a field that spans the arts and sciences, for it requires the adaptation and manipulation of the creative arts and design, the physical sciences, mathematics, sociology, psychology, and philosophy on any given project or exploration.
It is a field that is pushing the technological envelope in computer graphics and media studies by developing virtual environments, animations, and high end graphical and educational communication techniques; it is a field that is researching universal design solutions to make spaces and environments accessible and usable to individuals with diverse abilities; it is a field that is exploring sustainable and ecologically sensitive design solutions for buildings, structures, cities, landscapes and entire regions that will impact our global energy consumption and the future of our planet; it is a field that is planning and designing strategies in response to the eminent dangers of terrorism and natural disasters; it is a field that examines environment-behavior interactions and responds to the needs of diverse socio-economic groups; it is a field that preserves heritage, history and culture by restoring and/or reinterpreting the story of a place; it is a field that seeks to improve our physical, psychological, economical and sociological environments, and a field that will ultimately face the challenge of sustaining life on earth.
So the next time you think of architecture as a field that just draws pretty pictures of buildings, think again.
